Environment setting - Managing Environments in the Sustainian Plugin
Access to this feature requires Project Admin privileges.
This guide details the process for adding and managing various IT environments such as test servers, runtime environments, build servers, supercomputers, wearable devices, and other related equipment within your project using the Sustainian Jira Plugin. This functionality is crucial for accurate tracking and management of resource consumption and carbon footprint calculations.
Accessing the IT Environment Management Feature
Open the Project Settings: Open your project in Jira. This feature can also be accessed by clicking on the
...icon in the Project-related Settings available on the Carbon Footprint Dashboard.
Select Environment Settings: Click on the left side menu
Environment Settingsmenu item.
Adding a New IT Environment
Click on 'New Environment': Start by clicking the 'New Environment' button to input a new IT environment.
Enter Environment Details:
Environment Name: Provide a unique name for the environment (e.g., ITST ACME DEV1).
Description: Enter a brief description of the environment’s purpose and configuration.
Type: Select the type of environment from the dropdown (e.g., On-premise, Cloud).
Physical Location: Specify the country and specific location to calculate country-specific emission data accurately.
Located in a Local Server Room: If the environment is hosted within a local server room connected to an office, check this option. This is important as consumption from these servers will be deducted from the overall office consumption.
Electricity Consumption: Enter the estimated electricity consumption in kWh. How to measure and calculate this data?
Validity: Set the start and end dates during which the environment was or will be active. This ensures that emissions are only accounted for within this specified timeframe.
Save new Environment: Click the
Savebutton to apply the settings.
Editing an Existing IT Environment
Select the Environment: From the list of environments, click on the environment you wish to edit.
Update Information: Modify any details such as description, type, location, consumption, or validity dates as necessary.
Save Changes: Click the
Savebutton to apply the updated settings.
Best Practices
Comprehensive Details: Ensure that all fields are filled in accurately to reflect the true nature and usage of the IT environments.
Regular Updates: Keep the environment details up to date to reflect changes such as relocation, upgrades, or decommissioning.
Monitor Consumption: Regularly update the electricity consumption data to maintain accurate emission calculations.
Troubleshooting
Issues Saving Changes: Ensure you have the necessary permissions to make changes. If problems persist, check your network connection and try again.
Incorrect Data Reporting: Double-check the physical location and consumption entries if emission data appears incorrect. Adjustments in these fields can significantly affect the calculated emissions.
For troubleshooting, in addition to the points mentioned above, please make sure to read the general troubleshooting chapter and consult the FAQ section as well. These resources provide comprehensive guidance and can help you resolve any issues more efficiently.
Sustainability Tips
As part of our commitment to supporting your company's environmental efforts, we offer practical tips to help you reduce your carbon footprint. Here's a tip that can make a significant difference in your company:
Optimizing Server Utilization for Project Sustainability
For sustainability in project management, it's crucial to ensure that additional server environments associated with projects are active only when needed. Employing monitoring tools that can automate the shutdown and decommissioning of these environments when they are not in use is an effective strategy. This not only conserves energy but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with maintaining unnecessary server uptime. Tools like the Sustainian Jira plugin can help track and manage these environments efficiently, ensuring that resources are utilized only when absolutely necessary. Implementing such measures not only supports environmental goals but also leads to cost savings and enhanced operational efficiency in project management.
We are excited to support you in achieving your environmental sustainability goals. If you have any questions or need assistance during the configuration process, please do not hesitate to contact our support team via e-mail or through our designated Slack channel.
